Four Decades of Inquiry: A Forensic Perspective
(Duration 52:32)
Dr. Cyril H. Wecht is one of the world’s leading experts in forensic pathology who emerged as an early critic of the Warren Report in 1965 when he undertook a review of the investigation for the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In 1972, he became the first non-governmental pathologist to be granted access to evidentiary materials held at the National Archives. In 1965, he testified before the Commission on CIA Activities Within the United States, and, from 1977 to 1979, he served as a member of the Forensic Pathology Panel of the House Select Committee on Assassinations. He also consulted with Oliver Stone on the making of the film “JFK.” He has lectured widely and made numerous media appearances on the subject. As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Wecht has performed, supervised, reviewed, or, been consulted on tens of thousands of autopsies. As Coroner of Western Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County, he oversaw the investigation of all sudden, suspicious and unexplained deaths. He has performed over 14,000 autopsies and has reviewed or consulted on approximately 30,000 additional post-mortem examinations. Many of his cases are discussed in his popular, non-fiction books such as “Cause of Death,” “Grave Secrets,” “Who Killed Jon Benet Ramsey?” “From Crime Scene to Courtroom,” “A Question of Murder,” “Tales From the Morgue,” and “Mortal Evidence.” These publications explore some of the most infamous deaths and cases such as JFK, Robert Kennedy, Elvis Presley and O.J. Simpson.
